The upcoming March 21 General Council meeting presents a significant opportunity for the Tulalip community to influence its future. With general council elections on the horizon, community members are advocating for change, but the extent of that change will depend on participation levels.
Recently, the Board of Directors candidate forum, held at the Gathering Hall on March 12, saw a turnout of only 50 attendees, highlighting a concerning lack of engagement in vital discussions that affect the Tulalip Tribes. Additionally, about 30 individuals viewed the event online. The forum is available for viewing at iamtulalip.com for those who missed it.
This year, three seats on the Board of Directors are up for re-election, held by Teri Gobin, Hazen Shopbell, and Marlin Fryberg Jr. The forum, moderated by Eliza Davis, Executive Director of General Services, provided a platform for candidates to present their priorities and vision for the community. Candidates addressed various issues, including economic development, housing, cultural preservation, and the potential for a new school.
Angel Cortez emphasized his commitment to economic development and self-sufficiency, advocating for investments in food security and sustainable business ventures beyond gaming. Pat Contraro discussed her cautious support for disenrollment under specific, serious circumstances. David Fryberg Jr. highlighted the need for increased revenue streams to balance social services and general welfare, stressing the importance of strong leadership.
Teri Gobin focused on addressing community violence through early education and mentorship, underlining the role of cultural teachings in guiding youth positively. The forum showcased a range of perspectives, with candidates offering diverse solutions to the challenges facing Tulalip.
The March 21 meeting is a pivotal moment for the community to engage with these issues and have their voices heard. Participation in the election process is crucial for shaping the future of Tulalip.
